From Blog to Book

How do we turn blogs into books?

How do you deploy your voice as a blogger? Stay current with your blog? And get compelling material on the screen—and the page?

From Blog to Book will help you define the differences between digital media and print. You’ll clarify your material. Commit to a strategy for writing entries on a regular basis. And envision your book as a result of your blog.

In this group, you will write more material for existing blogs—your own or others’. From Blog to Book is also an opportunity to start a new blog. Every participant will take his or her writing further: to digital and print formats that communicate, educate, and entertain.

At From Blog to Book, you will:
>        write & revise blog entries—personal & commercial
>        choose a clear direction—for both blog & book
>        study blog prototypes that later became books
>        refine your voice as blogger & book author

  1. “I started without knowing the first thing about being a writer. And suddenly, after 10 minutes, I felt I was part of something. That there was this group of people with the same fears and doubts. The interaction was very useful, as was the confidence we gained through on-the-spot exercises and critical thinking.”

  6. “I learned that posting is separate from "doing"--and that it's the (uncensored) doing that's all-important in mastering daily writing. I learned about back story, point of view, structure, character, style--in short, all those elements that are important to any storytelling, be it blog or book or anything in between.”

  9. “Now I can see a blog for what it is: a public sketchbook. The workshop was really helpful to me. Now I understand why I didn't feel comfortable starting my blog—and how I can make it feel comfortable from now on.”

  10. “I learned so much and, as usual was motivated to keep writing when I walked out of the workshop. To be honest, I was just about to give up on blogging; I got caught up in the commercial hype of it and joined blogger groups, which totally wrecked my self-confidence. So thanks to the workshop I have decided to blog for myself again, and for my kids. I learned that turning a blog into a book takes a lot more than just putting posts together for a book. The workshop helped me remember why I started blogging in the first place: for myself.”

  11. “During the workshop I learned to manage my blog better; to give the audience a clear idea of what I write about; and to present my experiences in the most accurate way. The class gave me fresh energy to take better care of my blog. I see a big change in how I perceive my blogging. Before I was doing it in a messy way, without seeing the ''bigger picture''. Now I polish my posts more.”

  12. “I got a clearer picture if what it means to turn blogs into a book - it was an inspiring picture too, rather than an intimidating one. The workshop helped me to get a clearer idea of how blogging works and what it can achieve—as well what the limits are. The workshop also encouraged me to think about what, precisely, I want to say. I found the handouts helpful and am keeping them on my desk to browse through again and again.”

  13. “I have greater confidence in my blog concept, and in my ability to blog. The instructor has perfected the craft of managing meaningful workshop feedback. It is very easy for a group of adults to rip each other’s work to bits. But the instructor doesn’t let the group go anywhere near that ugly side of workshopping. This focus on he group’s comments gets us where we need to be. The instructor mastered this leadership skill to the benefit of every workshop participant.”
